Author interview – Tena

Welcome to my blog today Tena. Tell us a little about yourself.

I grew up a lonely only child in a single parent home.  My imaginary friends were my most prized possessions, if you can call them possessions. LOL.  I vowed to marry a man with lots of siblings (always thought it would be great to have lots of brothers and sisters), alas, as it turns out my husband and the love of my life too is an only child. To take that one step further, my best friend in the world is also an only child (she married a man with six siblings). But at least we all understand each other and believe me being an only child is not anywhere near as wonderful as portrayed.

When and why did you begin writing?  AWitchsJourney_w10497_med (2)

I began writing as soon as I could read and write.  Fun little stories and stories for my friend’s birthdays, etc.  It was a way to express my over active imagination without getting into trouble. Then life intervened and writing took a back seat for many years.  I was down sized from my job of fourteen years and decided with my hubby’s support the time was now. I had a few unfinished and finished manuscripts. Took them out, dusted them off, edited and polished them and sent one off.  Right time, right place and The Wild Rose Press contracted my first book.  Now, I have four contracted books and am living the dream.  LOL  Which sometimes turns into a nightmare when the characters don’t cooperate, a deadline looms and life careens out of control.  Ever have that happen? Over all I love being a writer.  Making things up for a living, it doesn’t get much better than that. LOL

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Maybe, never thought about it.  Wild life conservation is a topic near and dear to my heart, so I guess that came out in this book. Also a theme runs through all of my book, “Remember the magic to happily ever after.”

What authors have most influenced you?

Why?  Nora Roberts because she can spin a great tale. I like her paranormal tales more than her contemporary romances, and I truly enjoyed The Witness, a bit different for Nora.  More recently Molly Harper, I love her humor, paranormal creatures and entertaining prose. I laugh out loud at her books. Which leads to people looking at me like I’ve lost my mind.  Well okay, that’s not the only reason people look at me like that.

What are you reading now?

Nancy Atherton’s, Aunt Dimity  and The Buried Treasure; and The second in Nora Roberts  Guardians Trilogy, Bay of Sighs. And I’m always reading books from my fellow authors at The Wild Rose Press.

Q: Tell us about your new release. A Witch’s Journey is a story of redemption.  Pepper McKay is outed as a witch in Salem, Mass when she uses magic to save the wildlife sanctuary where she works. Then she inherits the McKay family enchanted property, meets a former Navy SEAL who maintains the property and together they build a wildlife rescue and rehab center. Along the way they each learn to overcome their demons.  But someone is trying to steal the McKay magic.

A Witch’s Journey – Blurb

Pepper McKay comes from a long line of powerful witches. Unfortunately, magic brings her nothing but trouble. She learned the love of wildlife rescue and rehab from her Aunt Ashling. After graduating from college, Pepper works for Salem Wildlife Sanctuary and lives from paycheck to paycheck until she inherits the McKay property in Lobster Cove. With the family land and resources, she dares to dream of starting her own wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center.

Lathen Quartz, a former Navy SEAL turned handyman maintains the enchanted McKay property for the McKay estate. But someone is trying to steal the McKay magic. Lathen offers to help Pepper achieve her life-long dream of building a wildlife center. During the long hours spent together on the project, their mutual attraction can’t be denied. But each harbors a deep, dark secret. Will they overcome their demons and give love a chance?

Pepper hopped out of the truck and took a deep breath. The ocean breeze brought a mixed scent of brine, sand, sun and kelp. Seabirds whistled and screeched through the air diving into the white crested waves, proudly emerging with dinner. Turning her attention to the land, she noticed beyond the barn, the pond was still there, even a bit bigger than she remembered. Caught up in the smells, sights, and sounds, she didn’t hear someone approach.

“Ms. McKay?”

“Sssshit,” she yelped and whirled around to see a muscular man, well over six feet, with surfer blond hair nearly to his shoulders, tousled by the ocean breeze. Rounding the corner of the cabin, he waved at her as he approached walking with a slight limp. Deeply tanned, he appeared to spend a lot of time outdoors.

“I’m Lathen Quartz. Glad you made it before dark. The road up here can be treacherous after dark if you don’t know where you’re going.  I finished up the enclosed aviary and was getting ready to leave. But now that you’re here, I’d be happy to show you around. Help you get settled.”

“Pepper McKay, call me Pepper.” Extending her hand towards him, she met his gaze. His large aquamarine eyes were mesmerizing, set above the high cheekbones, full lips and a butterscotch five o’clock shadow. She gave her head a shake. “Wait. You built an aviary?”

He shook her hand and smiled, shoving his hands in the pockets of his jeans and rocking back on his heels.

    • Tena, it’s my pleasure to have you visit today. I feel I know you better after the interview. I live in outside Toronto, Canada. I know you live in Colorado. Every time I read about how the weather has destroyed your garden, I want to cry.
Thanks for allowing me to interview you.

      • Yeah, this has been quite a weather year. (wrote a post about it on my blog complete with pictures) Hail the size of baseballs, thunder storms that light the sky every night. I love those as long as I’m inside, there isn’t any hail and don’t knock my DSL off. I’ve lived here all my life and never seen anything like this year. I did save a few tomato plants, kale is rebounding and carrots have no tops, but their good. Can’t help but wonder what winter will bring.
